Getting married in Denmark (as opposed to Ireland or SA)

Are you struggling with gathering paperwork to get married to you significant other?

Then Denmark might be a viable option for you.

Often called the “Las Vegas of Europe”, getting married in Denmark is a very straightforward process, and there are 2 options from which you can choose:

  1. Getting married through an agency
  2. DIY-ing it

Lets go through the two options:

Agency:

If you choose to get married through an agency (of which there are many to choose from and they are all very similarity priced – just Google), you will need to gather a few documents. Its important to note, a letter of no impediment WAS NOT required, although it can be requested if your case is wake and you leave any doubt in your submission. Our agent told us that we are entitled to a full refund by them should that be requested and that they have only seen a handful of case over the many years were this was requested. We ultimately choose an agency which had the best Trust Pilot review and we can highly recommend them. (Agency we used: https://marryabroadsimply.com/)

The agency requested we submit the following documentation to them as part of our marriage license application to the Danish Government;

  • 1-2 page document of your story; how you and your significant other met, how long you have been together, explain your living situation.
  • Photos of couple – supply photos showing beginning of relationship, during and current photos. (the more the better)
  • Evidence of communication – Whatsapp screenshots are enough. We supplied 5 screenshots just showing different times we spoke to each. (when we met and started talking, mid relationship, and more recent screenshot)
  • Scans of passports (ALL PAGES – outside pages and all pages inside, including empty ones)
  • Proof of Schengen Visa (if required)
  • IRP Card if residing in Ireland
  • EXTRAS we provide to help our case (my Schengen was expiring and we needed to ensure we get approved 1st around):
  • Evidence of holidays taken together (past flight tickets – we supplied 2 trips)
  • IF you live together – bank statements showing same address or similar – it helps your case

The agency then submit the documents online along with an online form that is filled in to capture details (the agency does all this). The Danish government will review, who will grant (or refuse) your application to get married in Denmark which is usually valid for 3 months. As long as you have provided all the documents mentioned above, this shouldn’t be a problem. You then choose one of the many locations across Denmark to tie the knot.

If for some reason, your application is refused, the agency will refund the fee you have paid to them for this service (as was the case with our agency, confirm with your own one tho). We got married through an agency called Marry Abroad Simply and their service and communication was excellent. They also provide details of photographers, flowers, catering etc. We chose the ‘Simply Everything Service’ and the cost of the service was €745. They have cheaper and more expensive services available to satisfy your needs. One thing I might say is, when paying online for the service, they have an ‘apostille’ extra, which cost 150 Euro extra. DO NOT BUY THIS. I will explain later on how to do this yourself (the agency actually recommended us to do it ourselves and save the money)

DIYing it;

If money is a factor and you are not in a particular rush, I would recommend you to go through this process on your own, the price will be significantly less. It doesn’t necessarily take longer than the agency route, the only thing is, the agency will notify/tell you if something is missing or wrong form the get go. To do everything yourself, the total cost is around €225 (1800 Danish Krona). You will need to complete the application forms yourself and submit it to the Danish government, all online. I would definitely recommend this if time is not a factor. However if under pressure and you are scared you are missing something, I would go with an agency.

Doing everything yourself would require the same documents as listed above with the agency and the process is the same.

  1. Submit Application
  2. Marriage license granted
  3. Book preferred townhall

There are numerous Youtube videos on the process and the link below should explain more and where you can start your application;

We decided to go through an agency, and have 0 regrets. The whole process was so easy and straightforward, and everything was handled for us.

However, if time is not a factor for you, as well as the expiration of your Schengen visa, you can 100% do it yourself and cut some costs.

We chose to get married in Copenhagen City Hall, which was absolutely stunning. There are multiple locations you can choose from, including even Gibraltar.

On the day

We arrived 15 minutes before our wedding time to the Townhall. It is important to note that you need to present your Passport to the Townhall before the marriage officiating to ensure you are who you say you are. They just do a quick check. We met our photographer which we organised and took some pictures. We then went up to the ‘Chapel’ which was beautiful and very cute. It has space for around 50 people should you require it. Once inside we were greeted by the marriage officiant and two witnesses. Our Officiant was a Danish woman that were incredibly professional and kind. The officiating takes approximately 10 minutes whereafter you have time to do your vows should you wish to do so. Once finished we signed the wedding register and were handed 2 copies of our newly marriage certificates in 4 languages (English, Danish, German and French). We finished in the Chapel and spend the next two hours with our photographer capturing memories in beautiful Copenhagen.

Apostille

I would recommend to get your marriage certificate apostilled as it would save your time and any headaches in the future.

The process is as follows;

  1. Go to website; https://dys.um.dk/Shop/purchase/details/6291b557-b0ac-4f5c-ba08-5f11eaa991a7

Here you will buy 2x apostle’s for your 2 marriage certificates. The cost is 230 Danish Korna (approx. 30 Euro).

  1. After your marriage go the Apostille office in Copenhagen; Asiatisk Pl. 2, 1448 København, Denmark. There is no need for an appointment. You just rock up, present them your receipt and certificates and they apostille it there and then. Takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

The whole day was so special and unique and we wouldn’t change it for the world. Copenhagen is an amazing city, very clean, everything works so well, overall beautiful and the people were great. One thing to remember is, it is really expensive. So do your homework and make sure it suit your budget.
